India Green Steel Coalition has evolved into a credible platform driving both knowledge and action for India’s green steel transition. Chaired by Mr. Rajiv Mangal (VP – Safety, Health & Sustainability, Tata Steel), the coalition aims to reduce emissions intensity in India’s steel sector by 30% by 2030, compared to 2023 levels. This vision is being advanced through a structured focus on demand creation, policy advocacy and stakeholder alignment across the value chain. Today, IGSC members collectively represent over 70% of India’s steel production capacity, reflecting strong industry backing for this transition.
What began as a collaborative effort has evolved into a robust body of work, spanning thought leadership on the green steel ecosystem, sustained industry engagement through member consultations and sector dialogues, and capacity-building initiatives to accelerate sectoral transition.
A key pillar of IGSC’s approach is its focus on implementation-oriented action, operationalised through dedicated Action Groups:
• Renewable Energy Action Group – Driving pilot interventions for renewable energy integration, particularly across secondary steel clusters, to enable low-carbon production pathways.
• Scrap Action Group – Led by Mr. Yogesh Bedi (Business Head – Green Steel & Recycling, JSW Steel), this group focuses on formalising scrap generation, enhancing its availability and utilisation in steel production to advance circularity in the sector.
• Policy Action Group – Led by Mr. Naveen Ahlawat (President & Head – Sustainability & Decarbonisation, Jindal Steel), this group is focused on shaping actionable policy recommendations and engaging with government stakeholders to support the sector’s decarbonisation journey.
As the coalition builds on this momentum, the next phase is geared towards scaling impact through expanded action groups, new thought leadership on green finance, pilot interventions and enhanced tools such as sustainability scorecards to track sectoral progress. All of this remains aligned with its overarching goal of enabling a globally competitive, low-carbon steel industry for India.
