The India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) is a joint initiative of WWF-India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to accelerate the transition to green steel manufacturing and consumption in India. IGSC aims to reduce the emissions intensity of India's steel production by 30% by 2030, as compared to 2023 levels.
As a multi-stakeholder platform representing ~70% of India’s crude steel production, IGSC brings together primary and secondary producers, alongside demand-side players to drive sustainable transformation in this hard-to-abate sector.
IGSC supports industry dialogue through science-based advocacy, capacity-building sessions and dedicated Action Group to develop pilot initiatives across key transition areas such as - renewable energy cluster for steel sector, scrap optimisation, and carbon capture & utilisation (CCU). These efforts are further strengthened by international expertise mobilised through WWF network offices.
By addressing key transition challenges and fostering industry-wide collaboration, IGSC actively engages with policymakers to shape an enabling environment for decarbonisation while supporting India’s goal of increasing domestic steel production sustainably.
IGSC is committed to decarbonising Indian steel production by reducing its carbon emission intensity by 30% by 2030 (compared to 2023 levels). Through strategic partnerships, technological advancements, and policy advocacy, IGSC aims to redefine India’s steel production landscape for a sustainable and competitive future, including a transition away from fresh investments in operationalising new blast furnaces post-2030.
